He vouched for Mr. Trump's character with skeptical evangelicals with whom Mr. Trump ultimately forged his own relationship. Portraying himself as a traditional conservative could also lead to a return to conservative media for Pence. For a time after leaving office as vice president, the Pences were homeless and appeared to be couch-surfing their way through Indiana.

The most recent national poll of Republican voters found that 77% have a favorable view of him. Among key parts of the GOP primary coalition, Trump continues to do quite well. An earlier CNN-SSRS poll found a narrower race between Trump, DeSantis, and the rest of the field, but it also showed that 34% of self-described white evangelicals would name Trump as their preferred pick for the nominee.

Many MAGA Republicans are wishing for Trump's "mortal demise," a former GOP Rep. says. Peter Meijer told The Atlantic he has heard MAGA Republicans say: "I can't wait until this guy dies." Other Republicans told The Atlantic they think Trump's diet and age might hasten his death. Meijer did not say which Republicans told him they wished Trump was dead. "I thought it was kind of a morbid, dark joke at first," Coppins told CNN.
